A single troy ounce of gold is relatively expensive, but a token representing a fraction of an ounce can be acquired and transferred in small increments. If many tokens represent claims on the same underlying bars, the integrity of the system depends on the issuer maintaining an accurate one-to-one (or otherwise stated) ratio between tokens outstanding and metal held. Independent attestations and audits are the primary tool for verifying this, but they provide point-in-time snapshots rather than continuous real-time verification.

- Audit and attestation risk: Reports and attestations provide snapshots, not guarantees. The quality, frequency, and independence of the auditor all affect how much weight to place on them.
